In 1989, Shuangxi's uncle, brother-in-law, and aunt all moved south to work, leaving behind nine unsupervised children and elderly grandparents. Shuangxi's parents stayed at home, took care of the children, and were filial to the two old people. They farmed the land like old scalpers and worked hard to send one niece after another to college and enter the society. When her father was unexpectedly disabled and lost her labor force, and her mother was diagnosed with cancer—except for a few words of hypocritical concern from her uncles, aunts, and cousins who had been favored by her parents, no one came to help or visit. After returning from rebirth, Shuangxi decided to take his parents south to work.
