The story takes place in "Qingwu Village", a deep mountain village on the edge of modern society, as well as the surrounding mountains and abandoned ancient towns radiating from the village. The complete traditional funeral rituals are preserved here. The coffin bearers are the "middlemen" with a special status in the village - connecting the living in the world with the dead in the underworld. They must not only abide by the "coffin rules" passed down by their ancestors, but also deal with the "obsession" behind the deceased and the "abnormalities" in the mountains and fields.
The "Heifeng Ridge" surrounding Qingwu Village is the burial place of villages of all ages. The ridge is filled with mist that persists all year round. It is said that there are "spirits guarding the mountain" and "ghosts who died in vain", and coffin bearers must rely on "rules" and "skills" to move through it. In addition, there is a "coffin-carrying family" hidden in the village that has been passed down for thousands of years, mastering unknown funeral secrets and yin and yang knowledge. The protagonist is the last descendant of this family.
