Chen Yan, a 35-year-old male executive at a modern company, is skilled in management and mechanical principles, and knows basic medicine and food preparation. After an accident, he transmigrates to 1965 Beijing, to Nanluoguxiang and Love in the Courtyard, where he becomes a 20-year-old man with the same name. Orphaned, an apprentice at a steel mill, timid by nature, and in debt to his neighbors, he finds himself in dire straits. Armed with a modern mindset and survival skills, he carves out a place for himself and turns his life around in a turbulent era. His story weaves together neighborhood rivalries, career growth, and two very different romances, while recreating the social landscape and texture of everyday life from the 1960s through the 1980s.
