The story begins with a car accident in which An Ran’s best friend, Yu Wanqing, dies saving her. Afterward, An Ran falls into a twisted relationship with Wanqing’s older brother, Yu Chengyuan. She unexpectedly becomes pregnant, then is forced to have an abortion, and is branded as someone who “killed her best friend and her own child.” Yu Chengyuan turns his grief over his sister into revenge against An Ran: he sabotages her at work, humiliates her, and even publicly dates a wealthy young woman who looks just like his sister, driving An Ran ever closer to despair.
After a construction site accident and several failed suicide attempts, Yu Chengyuan chooses to save An Ran at the brink of death and realizes that love lies beneath his hatred. He clumsily tries to make amends, but it is too late. With her heart already extinguished, An Ran calmly puts everything in order and ultimately takes her own life with pills.
“I don’t hate you anymore. I don’t love you anymore, either. I’m so tired. I’m leaving first.” These final words become her last release. On a clear day after the rain, Yu Chengyuan waits forever for someone who will never return, left to chew on his belated regret and the loneliness of having lost the one he loved for good.
