[Medicine × Art | Rational doctor × painter who lacks empathy]
During a late-night emergency shift, the contrast between the bloodstained white coat and the calm profile made painter Jiang Jinyue take an interest in Shen Shubai, a cardiac surgeon. Their arrangement starts from the start as a contract between “artistic creation × medical research.” They treat emotions as useless data and human relationships as research material.
When a scalpel meets a palette, their rational frameworks begin to crumble: he hides art books and changes her medical orders; she uses her paintings to unravel his fears and offers comfort with an awkward hug. They are each other’s most difficult cases, and each other’s only cure.
From reckoning with the past to standing together through the pandemic, from collaborating on therapy to facing doubts together, they learn to understand each other’s true feelings in each other’s language. Precise monitoring cannot measure a racing heart, and delicate brushstrokes cannot capture the depth of their love.
The experiment that began with observation ends with them choosing each other: love cannot be quantified. It is the enduring vital sign they willingly hold on to when their hearts lose control.
