I Joined Tencent for an Easy Ride. How Did I Become the Richest Man?

In his previous life, Li Mu was an ambitious entrepreneur, but major corporations copied his ideas and investors crushed him. Buried in debt, he jumped from a building.

Reborn in 2010, Li Mu finally saw the light:

“Start a business? Not a chance! In this life, I'll be the safest parasite in a major corporation!”

After joining the strategic investment department at Tencent, Li Mu drew up a meticulous “Slacking-Off and Risk-Avoidance Plan”:

1. Never lead major projects, so he wouldn't be blamed if they went wrong.

2. Invest only in small companies that looked insignificant, just to meet his KPIs.

3. Quit at lightning speed once he'd saved 50 million yuan for retirement.

But things soon started to go awry.

To get out of a high-profile project the executives were pushing as a guaranteed hit, he casually made up ten reasons it might fail. The very next month, the project blew up, and his boss exclaimed, “Li Mu is the Zhuge Liang of our age!”

To use up his department's budget and get off work early, he casually invested in a few street-stall startups, Meituan and Didi. They all became unicorns, and their valuations multiplied a hundredfold!

Ten years later.

Facing the “shadow empire” that had outmuscled Alibaba and crushed ByteDance, Pony Ma looked at the equity ownership chart, his eyes brimming with tears. He clasped Li Mu's hand tightly.

“Mr. Li, so all those formidable rivals along the way were pieces you secretly positioned for the company? You were willing to bear the infamy just to help Tencent not only win today, but monopolize the future... You've suffered so much!”

Looking at the pile of assets in his name, which had even bought out Tencent, Li Mu broke into a cold sweat.

“Boss, if I told you... I really only invested in them to use up the annual budget... would you believe me?”
