Deep in the Zhongnan Mountains stood a dilapidated Sanqing Temple, where sixteen-year-old novice Shen Yanqiu lived a quiet, austere life, keeping watch over a bronze oil lamp of unknown age. Before his master passed away, he had said, “Guard it well, and wait for the one destined to find it.” From then on, Shen Yanqiu treasured the ancient lamp, known as the “Purple Abode Mystic Lamp,” as dearly as his own life.
One stormy night, an uninvited guest shattered the peace. A man in a dark blue silk robe tried to seize the Mystic Lamp and attacked without hesitation, but the moment he touched its base, a mysterious force struck back and killed him on the spot outside the temple. Then his master, who should already have passed on, appeared as a remnant soul. After leaving him with the words “Cultivation begins with cultivating the heart,” he vanished. At that moment, flecks of purple flame sprang to life in the lamp’s wick, and the ancient patterns on its base began to flow as though alive.
Only then did Shen Yanqiu learn that the lamp held the true meaning of cultivation in the Dao De Jing and could summon the Purple Abode vital qi that cultivators dreamed of. But news of its appearance spread like wildfire. Black-clad men bearing “Xuanqing” tokens, children who had vanished below the mountain, and a mysterious shadow peering down from the rafters... One crisis after another swept him into a maelstrom.
The blue markings appearing on his wrist faintly echoed the patterns on the lamp’s base. Cultivation methods were hidden between the lines of his master’s notes on the Dao De Jing, while a jade pendant carved with the character “Zhang” was somehow tied to the secret behind the Xuanqing Temple’s destruction a century ago.
Should he stay in Sanqing Temple and scrape by, or take the lamp and venture into this treacherous world of cultivation? Clutching the Mystic Lamp, Shen Yanqiu gazed at the roiling mist deep in the Zhongnan Mountains. The sixteen-year-old would come to understand that cultivation had never been about pursuing immortality. It was about guarding that one undying light within the heart amid the darkness of human nature.
