"The Rivers and Lakes Will Not Die" is set in the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong in 1993, and uses the perspective of Chen Zhihao squatting in the mahjong pavilion to reveal the undercurrents and human nature behind Xin Ngee Ann's collection of protection fees.
