The story takes place in the modern city of Haicheng. Its central rule revolves around “memory echoes”: when someone experiences extreme trauma, the intense emotional energy is “burned” into a particular space, forming a “memory echo field.” Anyone who enters the field relives the traumatic moment through fragmented sights, sounds, and sensations. These echoes aren’t ghosts, but a kind of psychic residue, like a recording embedded in the environment, and they usually fade quickly. But when a person with a special constitution, known as an “anchor,” is present, the echo attaches itself to them. The male lead, Jiang Chi, is an unconscious anchor. He is drawn to traumatic events and becomes a vessel and amplifier for their echoes. As a result, he is constantly drawn into mysterious cases and made to endure painful memories that aren’t his own. The female lead, Su Man, is a psychology expert and the only person able to identify and make sense of these echoes. The killer exploits this supernatural phenomenon to create alibis, disguising murders as accidents or suicides.
