After losing his job, Zhang Jiuyao hopes to make a living with his family's Dragon-Shaking Classic.
He adjusts the furniture for his insomniac landlord and unexpectedly earns his first wisp of "merit spiritual energy."
It turns out that in this modern city, where spiritual energy has run dry, the only way to gain resources for cultivation is to break feng shui curses and resolve the karmic entanglements of vengeful spirits.
From then on, his clients take a strange turn:
Insomniac office workers, mothers haunted by infant spirits, collectors with ancient jade, and a police schoolmate dogged by misfortune...
Poisonous hallway drafts, infant-spirit curses, malevolent ancient jade, internet curses... Every kind of cursed spirit becomes a stepping stone on his path of cultivation.
When a shadowy industry comes to light, an ancient earth demon appears in a mass grave, and foreign forces begin using feng shui to undermine the nation's fortune and its dragon veins,
Zhang Jiuyao holds the completed Dragon-Shaking Classic and addresses the world's otherworldly practitioners in a ringing voice:
"My path to immortality lies in this bustling world, amid its ten thousand lights and countless homes."
"Temper the heart with curses and become an immortal through merit. This path reaches the heavens!"
