As a scholar of Ming history, I am familiar with the stories that may be buried under every inch of rammed earth here. In the autumn of the 16th year of Chongzhen, the governor Sun Chuanting died here, Tongguan fell, and the last backbone of the Ming Dynasty was broken - I have read these sentences in history books thousands of times. I can even recite the famous statement in "History of the Ming Dynasty": "When the court dies, the Ming Dynasty dies."
But knowing and seeing are two different things.
Until that autumn dusk, I touched a city wall brick with honeycomb-like corrosion marks next to the archaeological exploration site of the Tongguan ruins. The coolness coming from my fingertips suddenly became concrete and turbulent, as if three hundred and eighty years had collapsed at that moment. I heard the horns in the wind, smelled the smoke and blood, and saw the blurry and dissipating figures on the city wall.
