The 1975 Beauty Blogger and Her Army Husband

Beauty makeover comeback, face-slapping wish fulfillment, love after marriage, everyday life as a military couple, drama in the compound, women supporting women, entrepreneurship and prosperity, the tide of the times. Xu Hongying opens her eyes to find herself branded the “ugliest woman in the compound,” jilted by her military-officer fiancé. Everyone says she isn’t good enough for him.

She turns around and uses a jar of homemade Snow Cream to transform the poor girl next door into a rising star of the art troupe.

The whole compound is in an uproar!

The haughty regiment commander’s wife knocks on her window at night. “Xiao Xu, can you help cover my spots? I want to meet an old comrade.”

Her former fiancé, who once looked down on her, is consumed by regret. “Hongying, I was wrong...”

She turns away and links arms with the cold-faced big shot from the military district, smiling brightly. “Director Gu, I hear you’ve got a batch of Vaseline?”

Later, she leads the wives in the compound to start side businesses and learn practical skills, taking their classes from a bathhouse night school all the way to the Great Hall of the People.

Facing three thousand delegates, she declares each word with conviction: “Women of the new era must be more than virtuous. We must stand tall and live beautifully!”

In a corner, Gu Jingchen, stars on his shoulders, gazes at her with shining eyes.

His young wife is no longer the ugly girl everyone once bullied. She has become the most beautiful light, illuminating an entire era.
