This is the story of university lecturer Shu Qingzhi, twenty-eight, and seventeen-year-old Jiang Chen, who meet in the height of summer in Qingxi Town. He promises, “Wait for me for two years,” and works desperately to get into her university. Over the next seven years, they navigate their eight-year age gap and all the obstacles of reality, from fierce opposition from their parents and a crisis of trust caused by workplace flirtation to clashing at different stages of personal growth. In the end, the lakeside art museum he designed becomes their wedding venue. Five years later, he returns with their daughter to the creek where fireflies danced, the place where their hearts first stirred that summer. Time has transformed their restrained, patient wait into a love that will last a lifetime.
