Tales of Republican-Era Palace Lanterns

During the Lantern Festival of 1928, snow and palace lanterns cast a backdrop of stifling romance over the Forbidden City. An Ran, a former student from Jinling whose family had fallen on hard times, was forced to enter the palace as one of the Marshal’s insignificant concubines. For three years, the only comfort that helped her endure was a plum-blossom hairpin left by her childhood neighbor, Nuo Kang, now the chief palace guard. At the Lantern Festival banquet, the two reunited across palace walls and the divide of their stations, their eyes brimming with longing they could not express. Beneath the cold plum trees in the imperial garden, Nuo Kang gave her a pair of matching warm jade pendants and promised to help her escape the palace. But their brief reunion was cut short by an unexpected interruption. The Third Concubine’s sinister gaze had already fixed on their forbidden love. Rivalries for the Marshal’s favor stirred beneath the surface, and An Ran and Nuo Kang’s love was like a plum blossom blooming proudly in a snowstorm. Bound by the many shackles of the palace amid a turbulent age, they resisted an uncertain fate with resilience and devotion, clinging to the hope of staying together for life even in despair.
