1793: The British Embassy's Audience with Qianlong (Unmasking the Qing Dynasty's 'Golden Age Hoax')

As the luster of the "Kangxi-Qianlong Golden Age" fades under historical scrutiny, Macartney's An Account of the British Embassy to the Emperor of China reads like a sharp scalpel, cutting through the false prosperity of the Qing Empire in the eighteenth century. A firsthand account by a member of a Western diplomatic mission, the book calmly shatters the illusion of the "Celestial Empire": along the way, people in rags fought over scraps of food; soldiers carried rusted firearms and wore helmets as flimsy as cardboard; Qianlong dismissed the technological achievements of the Industrial Revolution as "curious inventions and ingenious contrivances"; and systemic corruption ran deep through the bureaucracy. From the diplomatic maneuvering at the Jehol Summer Palace to the people's hardship along the Grand Canal, from the apt metaphor of "a decrepit old ship" to the sober prediction that "a few three-masted warships would suffice to destroy the coastal defenses," every detail in the book stands as hard evidence exposing the "golden age fraud." It is not only a valuable historical record of cross-cultural contact, but also shows us the institutional stagnation and civilizational gulf created by isolationism. Why was this once-celebrated period eventually removed from textbooks? The answer lies in this firsthand account, whose every word pierces through to the truth.
