The Pacification of Yunnan

Pingdian Shimo is a one-volume historical account by an unknown Qing-dynasty author. It mainly recounts the complex unrest and campaigns in early Qing Yunnan, historically known as Dian, and the surrounding regions, focusing in particular on the cascading effects of Wu Sangui’s rebellion and major events such as the return of Yunnan and Guangdong-Guangxi to Qing allegiance. The author says that during the turmoil he took refuge in the deep mountains, and later compiled this book at a friend’s request, drawing on his own experiences and what he had heard. Though he avoids making unsupported claims about certain dates, place names, and personal names, the account is thorough and clearly structured, striving to recreate the military events, politics, and shifting human loyalties of the era through vivid detail. As a work of unofficial history, it is less constrained by the authority of orthodox histories and gives greater weight to firsthand observation and the inner lives of its characters, making the past feel immediate and engaging. The book describes the causes of Wu Sangui’s rebellion, decisions at the imperial court, clashes between rebel and Qing forces, and the return of local Yunnan powers to Qing allegiance, as well as the Qing court’s campaigns to suppress the rebellion. It also weaves in the interactions and fates of local officials, soldiers, rebel generals, and ordinary people. Alongside its account of military strategy and civil and military planning, it reveals the characters, conflicting interests, and choices and dilemmas faced by individuals in troubled times, helping readers understand the unfolding turmoil from multiple perspectives. An important supplementary source for the study of the Revolt of the Three Feudatories in the early Qing and the history of Yunnan, Pingdian Shimo offers not only precious firsthand historical material but also a more vivid, three-dimensional perspective for modern readers. Historians and anyone interested in rebellions in imperial China and frontier politics alike can gain a deeper understanding of this pivotal period.
