The story takes place in Anqiu, a small town in central Hebei, in the anti-Japanese base area behind enemy lines in 1943. At the time, our forces are growing stronger, and several nearby county seats have been liberated. The Japanese and their puppet troops in Anqiu are all on edge, each plotting an escape route. Cai Shuigeng, the head waiter at Dingxianglou, a donkey-meat restaurant, is highly regarded by the Japanese and their collaborators. In truth, he is an underground Communist who has the enemy dancing in the palm of his hand. Under Cai Shuigeng's leadership, several Communist Party members launch a series of brave underground resistance operations.
