A Science-Track Top Scorer Takes the Imperial Exams? His Parents Rally to Back Him

[Imperial exams + court politics + farming + alternate history + lighthearted + no romance]

Wang Hanwen was the top science-track scorer in the national college entrance exam. Just as he was nearing the end of his PhD, he suddenly died and transmigrated into the second son of the Wang family.

His father was already the least favored by his grandfather, and Wang Hanwen was even more neglected.

He had been frail since childhood and was often bullied by his cousins.

After transmigrating, Wang Hanwen had planned to farm and sell tofu with his parents. That would have been just fine, at least he wouldn’t have to study himself to death again. But in this cruel world, he had no choice but to pass the imperial exams if he wanted to protect his parents.

Wang Hanwen passed every exam along the way, achieving the rare feat of placing first in all six levels. The former top scorer of the college entrance exam became the emperor’s new favorite.

After suffering from a toothache for days, the emperor complained to Wang Hanwen.

Emperor: My dear subject, foreign forces are invading, and we don’t have enough provisions for our troops.

Wang Hanwen: I have a plan. I know a few novel tricks. Instant noodles can solve the soldiers’ current problems: a shortage of rations and the difficulty of carrying them. They’ll let us hold out against the enemy for the long haul.

Emperor: My dear subject, the court is in turmoil.

Wang Hanwen: I have a plan. I know a bit about agriculture. Only when the farmers rise up can we rein in the arrogance of the powerful clans and nobles.

Through Wang Hanwen’s repeated efforts, the people lived in peace and prosperity, and the nation thrived in peace and good health.

His parents and clan were overjoyed: Hanwen, you truly are the hope of our people.

The emperor was delighted: My dear subject, I would gladly give you my daughter’s hand in marriage.

The ministers were horrified: Chief Grand Secretary, how can you be so clever?

Chief Grand Secretary Wang: Grind through five years of exams and three years of practice tests, and you’ll be unbeatable wherever you go!
