Shen Qingmo gained the ability to read minds, but tuned in to the wrong frequency:
What she hears is never affection or sincerity, only the schemes, jealousy, and murderous intent buried in people’s hearts.
Until one midnight, a nonhuman entity made its home on her frequency:
“Your fear tastes delicious.”
It calls itself the sole reply to her lonely signal, and sets a rule: from now on, every word she says must be a lie, and it alone will judge and observe this game.
So Shen Qingmo begins fighting to survive under a double gaze:
By day, she is a corporate white-cut-black wearing a “secret identity.”
Faced with coworkers who tamper with data to frame her, an IT guy watching her in secret, and a neighbor whose movements seem suspicious, she builds walls with lies, sorting truth from traps amid countless inner voices.
By night, she is an accomplice in a love-hate battle with an evil spirit.
The being called Xie Wang feeds on her emotions, but is also learning about human love and hate. “You’re my collection,” he says, yet amid countless crises, he reveals an almost obsessive protectiveness toward her.
As the stalker’s footsteps draw near, the schemes in the office come to light, and Xie Wang’s “learning” spirals out of control
Shen Qingmo realizes that the entanglement that began in terror has long since become a twisted symbiosis.
She asks, “Are you an evil spirit here to devour me, or a lunatic here to save me?”
He replies, “I am the echo of your loneliness, and your only accomplice.”
