During the Jingyun era of the Tang dynasty, Lu Lingfeng, Su Wuming, and their companions investigate a strange case of “corpse transformation” in the Zhongnan Mountains. A rare celestial alignment of seven stars suddenly sweeps them into a rift in time and space, and they transmigrate to Changde, Hunan, in the late autumn of 1943.
Changde is already under the shadow of Japanese aggression, and the Battle of Changde is about to begin. Before the fighting starts, however, a series of bizarre cases unfold in the city: Tang dynasty court music sounds from an empty theater in the dead of night; dead soldiers inexplicably “rise” to pass on intelligence; corpses floating in the Yuan River bear eerie smiles; and some claim to have seen “ghost soldiers marching through the streets”...
After recovering from their shock, the Tang dynasty investigators reunite amid the raging war. Lu Lingfeng and Su Wuming, the brilliant partners, join forces once again, only to discover that the enemy is beyond anything they imagined. Japanese spies and Chinese collaborators have infiltrated the city and are plotting psychological warfare; others are exploiting folk superstitions to sabotage the defenders, while a germ warfare conspiracy linked to the Japanese Army's Unit 731 is beginning to emerge.
Modern guns and artillery clash with ancient martial arts, while modern bacteriology meets the medical wisdom of the Tang dynasty.
When the guns finally roar in the defense of Changde in November 1943, this “special operations unit” from a thousand years in the past must uncover the truth behind every strange case amid a hail of bullets. In their own way, they will defend this unfamiliar city, fight alongside the soldiers of China's 57th Division and the indomitable people of Changde, and write a legend that crosses time itself amid the tides of history.
Nice! As a Changde person, I can't wait to read it all in one sitting!
