The Immeasurable Starry Sky

Humanity believed the universe would one day be understood.

In the year 2600, human civilization had entered a highly rationalized interstellar age.

Jump travel had become routine, mechs roamed alien planets, and exploration had been broken down into precise, methodical procedures.

Distances were compressed, the unknown was catalogued, and risks were calculated.

The stars seemed to have lost their mystery.

Then a series of exploration accidents began.

There was no clear enemy and no observable invasion,

only probes that went silent, time records out of sync, and exploration reports that defied logic.

Every system was functioning normally, yet none could provide an answer.

Before humanity understood the true nature of the danger,

an ordinary analyst began to find a disturbing pattern in the data

that had been “classified as system noise.”

It was not an error.

It was information that had somehow been permitted to exist.

As exploration continued, humanity gradually realized:

what they faced was neither an alien civilization nor a monster that could be destroyed.

In a sense, those entities were immortal.

They did not respond, communicate, or care.

For the first time, technology became meaningless.

For the first time, reason could no longer make sense of itself.

When observation itself became a mistake,

when understanding began to collapse,

humanity finally understood:

the stars were not unconquerable,

but immeasurable.
