A long-form interview show. The host was known for asking incisive questions. They talked about music, about the creative process, and about the ups and downs of the past five years. Then the host changed tack, suddenly asking the question everyone in the audience was most curious about.

“Lin Huai, we all know your career is going incredibly well now, but people have always been curious about your relationship with Miss Shi Niannian. I heard she really was your number-one hater back then?”

The room fell silent for a moment.

Then everyone burst out laughing. It was a long-running inside joke in the industry: Lin Huai’s star assistant had once torn into her mercilessly on the campus forum, posting unflattering photos even more viciously than the haters did.

Lin Huai laughed too. She didn’t answer right away, instead turning to look toward the audience.

Shi Niannian sat in the front row, dressed in a simple light-blue suit. She held a tablet and was checking the safety plans for the next concert tour. Only when she heard her name did she look up.

Their eyes met across the room.

The lights fell on Lin Huai’s face, tracing her delicate jawline. Her eyes shone brilliantly, as if filled with starlight.

“That’s right,” Lin Huai said into the microphone, her voice carrying through the room with a smile. “She really couldn’t stand me back then. Eight out of every ten posts dragging me were hers. She had a knack for finding the perfect angle, and she especially knew how to hit me where it hurt.”

Laughter rippled through the audience.

Shi Niannian glared at Lin Huai and silently mouthed a curse.

Lin Huai saw it perfectly well. Her smile deepened, her eyes curving into crescents. “Mm-hmm. She still can’t stand me now, either.”
