The modern city of Jiangcheng is the story’s central setting. Hidden within it are three major powers: the Ghost-Sealing Heirs, the Evil-Quelling Bureau, and the Ghost-Worshipping Cult. The boundary between the worlds of yin and yang is blurred, and vengeful ghosts, dark arts, and human society are intertwined. Ancient families such as the Lu and Su families carry on the traditions of sealing ghosts and controlling evil, but they also harbor the danger of colluding with malevolent spirits.
Major Powers
- The Lu family (Ghost-Sealing Heirs): For generations, they have guarded the Abyss-Sealing Seal, an ancient bronze seal, with the mission of suppressing evil spirits and protecting the human world. Lin Fan is the last heir.
- The Evil-Quelling Bureau: An official organization devoted to controlling evil. Its members are mostly descendants of magical families or folk experts, such as Su Qing. They handle supernatural incidents in the city, but their members are divided in their allegiances.
- The Ghost-Worshipping Cult: The main antagonistic organization. Its ultimate goal is to “awaken the King of All Ghosts and overturn the order of the human world.” It specializes in refining vengeful ghosts and using evil talismans and artifacts. By conspiring with traitors inside prominent families, it infiltrates human society.
- The Su family: An old magical family in Jiangcheng. It possesses some secret arts and forbidden techniques for controlling evil. The family is divided between the “protectors,” including Su Qing’s father, and the “collaborators,” including a traitor. It is a key link between the protagonist and the Ghost-Worshipping Cult.
