Yang Linsheng was born in a remote mountainous area of Guihai Province. After failing the college entrance examination, he went south to work in Shenzhen. The ordeal at the construction site awakened him, and he resolutely returned to his hometown to repeat his studies, and was admitted to the newly merged Guihai University with a score of 60 points higher than the first-tier exam.
