The Peak of Silence

The Silent Peak

Mass spectrometers don’t lie, unless someone teaches them to keep quiet.

On the eve of a technology summit, Li Mingyuan died in his study. Security footage showed no one entering or leaving. The scene had all the hallmarks of suicide, and the autopsy report was clean enough to be a lie.

There was only one problem: the 1,024th peak on the mass spectrum.

Molecular weight: 247.08. Quantity: 0.5 milligrams. No matches in any database.

The “Peak” investigation team was assembled on an encrypted channel:

· Qin Ming, forensic pathologist, transferred off the case after insisting on investigating a similar peak three years ago

· Lin Che, forensic trace evidence expert, able to read three days of light history from a residual 0.1 lux

· Chen Nuo, cyber police officer, skilled at fishing anomalous byte streams out of encrypted traffic

They’re up against “perfect crimes” meticulously designed with science:

· A compound with a half-life timed to slip past routine testing windows

· Lighting angles calculated to erase crucial shadows

· Server logs deleted with millisecond precision

When all the evidence remains silent, the only thing that speaks is the peak on the mass spectrometer that shouldn’t exist.
