Synopsis

Notes from the Western Expedition is a collection of essays written by the Qing dynasty literatus Wang Jingqi during his journey west in 1724, the second year of the Yongzheng reign. The book comprises around 35,000 characters. Following the author's route from Hebei to Xi'an in Shaanxi, it weaves together his observations along the way, encounters with people, depictions of society, and accounts of historical events. Its scope is broad and its style meticulous, combining documentary value with literary merit. The collection includes letters, prefaces and postscripts, short biographies, miscellaneous notes on people and events, political essays, and reflections. Some pieces offer incisive exposure of official circles and corrupt administration, such as "Memorial on Qian Tongzheng's Proposals" and "Administration in Xi'an." Others vividly depict the hardships of ordinary people and local customs, such as "A Short Biography of Bu Guang" and "An Account of Meeting Three Women in Hongshi Village." It also includes commentary on historical events, such as "The Deaths of Zhou Zhong and Xiang Yu" and "The Sixteen Prefectures of Yanyun," alongside casual discussions of poetry, customs, and anecdotes, such as the preface to Zhu Hanyuan's Collected Poems of Changwuzi and "Women's Foot Binding." With keen powers of observation and a critical spirit, the author recorded a wealth of social realities from the early Yongzheng years. His accounts of livelihoods, military affairs, and official administration in the northwest are particularly valuable as historical sources. Wang Jingqi writes with candor and feeling, shifting from impassioned indignation to wry humor, and displaying the learning and sensibility of a Qing scholar. Pieces such as "Meritorious Officials Must Not Be..." later drew wide attention for their sharp arguments and pointed criticism of the ills of the times. Yet because the book repeatedly criticized and satirized current affairs, it was banned during the Yongzheng reign, and its author, Wang Jingqi, was punished as a result.
