On April 1, 1990, outside Kowloon Mong Kok East Secondary School, a blond-haired gangster was selling videotapes with no covers.
“Fifty bucks a tape.”
“What kind of tape has no cover?”
Three boys in school uniforms came over. The greased-haired student grinned and offered him a cigarette. “Boss, is the content any good?”
“Full frontal nudity. Local girls.” The blond-haired thug blew smoke in his face. “Foreign girls have skin like sandpaper and scream like pigs being slaughtered. How could they compare to the local stuff?”
Half an hour later, several thousand tapes had sold out.
The blond-haired thug excitedly reported to the approaching chubby young man in white and muscular young man in black. “Brother Jimmy, Brother Ching, we’ve made a fortune! Sold every last one. We made over fourteen thousand!”
The muscular young man, Brother Jimmy, smiled faintly. “Good work, Ah Lik.
Tell the guys who helped tonight to meet at Fong Wing Kee at eight. Everyone gets a red envelope, and the beer’s on us. They can bring their girls, too.”
Once Ah Lik was out of earshot, Jimmy’s smile faded. He turned to Brother Ching beside him and asked, puzzled,
“Ah Ching, are we really going to be okay selling these tapes?”
