In 1940, nineteen-year-old Song Xiuyuan, a member of the Anti-Japanese Kill Traitors Corps, leads a double life. By day, he is the nephew of a puppet army general and passes himself off as a rich young master. In secret, he is the Scholar Assassin, a figure feared by both the Japanese and their collaborators, with multiple anti-traitor missions already behind him. Late on the night of August 6, after a traitor sells him out, Japanese and puppet troops surround his hideout in Shoubi Alley, Beiping. Cornered, Song Xiuyuan burns the classified documents and holds off dozens of enemies alone in the kitchen with a single pistol, taking several bullets. After his capture, he remains steadfast and unyielding in the hospital. He dies in the early hours of August 8, at just nineteen years old.
