This is the story of the journey west to obtain the scriptures undertaken by the demon-slayer Yun Ya and the ancient demon Wu Jin. Yun Ya is driven by an obsession with vanquishing demons, but after clashing with fish demons, pig demons, and other monsters, he gradually realizes that demons arise from the corruption in people’s hearts, and that the true way to vanquish them is to guide people’s hearts. He joins forces with Wu Jin, who seeks the Mahayana Buddhist teachings, and together they travel west, resolving the obsessions of so-called demons such as the Sand Demon and the Bull Demon King. After enduring the trials of love in the Kingdom of Women, they finally reach Spirit Mountain and obtain the true scriptures. When they return to the Eastern Lands, they establish the Heart-Deliverance Temple to preach Buddhism and guide all living beings. But Chancellor Li Linfu and monks from Tianzhu frame them. Fortunately, the Heavenly Emperor sees through the plot and clears their names, allowing Mahayana Buddhism to spread throughout the land and ushering in an age of peace and prosperity.
