Lu Yunqi, a tattoo artist in an old alley, is an ember scribe who can glimpse the obsessions of the dead. Using his own emotions as ink, he helps the departed write their final wishes, but must endure the erosion of his feelings and risk becoming a soulless ink puppet.
One rainy night, he encounters a clingy ink-wraith, which leads him to clues about his missing father and the Ink Burners, an organization that hunts scribes. Beneath his little shop lies the entrance to the Ink Ruins, and within his body sleeps forbidden living ink that can break his fate.
Will he sink into the Ink Ruins, or wield love as a blade and rewrite the destiny of scribes and the city?
