The Chronicle of Clear Winds on the Inkstone

During the Xuande reign, Shen Yanqiu, a low-ranking clerk at the Jiangnan Textile Bureau, stumbles upon a shocking corruption scheme through a canal transport ledger, drawing him into the whirlpool of court politics and the martial world. He protects a widowed woman and her young child, takes on corrupt officials and ruthless criminals, and forms an alliance with Su Wanna, a shopkeeper in the embroidery trade. Together, they journey north from the water towns of Jiangnan, facing the Canal Gang, battling river pirates, and entering the capital, where they confront the overwhelming power of the eunuch Wang Zhen. When the Tumu Crisis throws the Ming dynasty into turmoil, he steps up to open a sea route for canal transport and sends desperately needed provisions to the capital. Amid the factional struggles at court, he sees through the pursuit of fame and fortune, declines high office and generous rewards, and returns to Jiangnan. After a lifetime of ups and downs, he tends a small osmanthus cake shop, watches Gou Dan grow into an upright official, sees countless sails pass along the canal, and witnesses the enduring bustle of everyday life. Amid the tides of a great era, a humble clerk, with a sincere and compassionate heart, protects the simple joys of ordinary people and writes a legendary tale of the Ming dynasty hidden in the margins of history.
