There Is Land in Nanshan

Content introduction "There is Field in Nanshan" is a warm and delicate pastoral epic that tells the story of young Chen Changqing's sixty years of pure farming life in the fictional Nanshan Village of Ning Dynasty. When he was fifteen years old, during spring plowing, Chen Changqing stepped on the thawed soil with bare feet and sowed the first seeds of his life under the guidance of his father. He and Yueniang, a girl from the neighboring village, sealed their love with grasshoppers and embroidered handkerchiefs, and got married with the simplest etiquette on the bank of the Qinghe River. From then on, picking ferns in spring, working in the fields in summer, harvesting rice in autumn, and pickling vegetables in winter, their life rhythms are synchronized with the twenty-four solar terms. The novel delicately depicts traditional farming wisdom: how to improve soil by retting manure, how to use rice fields to raise fish to form an ecological cycle, how to identify edible mushrooms and herbs from mountains and forests, and how to use different fishing methods to obtain gifts in Qinghe River. There is no counterattack in the imperial examination, no business war to get rich, just the down-to-earth work of a family relying on mountains and rivers. From building houses with rammed earth to raising children, from recording farmers' proverbs to teaching their grandchildren, Chen Changqing and Yueniang have witnessed the subtle changes in Nanshan Village over the past thirty years - old trees have died and new seedlings have grown, and the types of crops have gradually become richer, but the core ethics and rhythm of the mountain village have never changed. When Chang Qing handed the polished sickle to his son Chen Shi, he had completed the most complete reincarnation of his life. This is an affectionate hymn dedicated to the land, a long scroll of peasant customs without the best. In the changing seasons and inheritance from generation to generation, the most authentic appearance of farming civilization is shown: people are diligent and not lazy, sincere and faithful to nature, and all things coexist and live endlessly.
