The Gaozu Emperor received Heaven's mandate, raised the dragon banner at Taiyuan, unified the realm, and laid the foundations of the Tang dynasty. But in his later years, he trusted sorcerers, sought immortality, and took elixirs, provoking public outrage until the eunuchs assassinated him. The empire was plunged into chaos, and its collapse seemed imminent.
