The Awakening of Lord Guan: A Record of Loyalty, Righteousness, and Breaking Attachments

A book of deification and release from obsession, told from the perspective of a third-party observer.

A thousand-year question: How did Guan Yu, a general of Maicheng trapped by his obsession with defeat, become the revered Demon-Subduing Great Emperor, honored by the people and venerated by all three realms? And after attaining Buddhahood as the Ancient Buddha Who Covers the Heavens, how did one wisp of lingering resentment become a light of bodhi that protects the mortal world?

The story begins beneath the setting sun at Maicheng. A wisp of lingering resentment from Guan Yu, a defeated general trapped by his obsession with war, staggers through a thousand years. The loyal souls of Yashan, the honor and trust of Jinzhong, the righteous valor of the Qi family army, the compassion of healers… The hopes and steadfast devotion of all living beings to the four virtues of loyalty, righteousness, benevolence, and faith gradually shape his divine nature.

This is not a legend of “heaven-sent deification,” but a journey of cultivation through “letting go of obsession to attain the Dao.” He lays down the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, sheds his bloodstained armor, and releases the Red Hare that races like the wind. The martial general’s violence and glory are ultimately transformed into a light of bodhi that protects the mortal world.

From a defeated general to the Demon-Subduing Great Emperor, revered by the people and venerated by all three realms, and finally to the Ancient Buddha Who Covers the Heavens, he journeys from being bound by obsession to returning to his true nature. Through the eyes of Xuan Yi, a witness to a thousand years, the story slowly reveals the age-old truth of how “loyalty, righteousness, benevolence, and faith shape the divine nature.”

As the saying goes: When all realms are freed from obsession, bodhi is attained just as it is.

Loyalty and righteousness are not lofty symbols. They are convictions kept alive in everyday life, a righteous light passed from heart to heart, generation after generation. The Awakening of the Emperor Guan: A Record of Loyalty, Righteousness, and Release from Obsession invites you to witness a thousand-year journey of letting go and uncover the age-old mystery of how a warrior became a Buddha.
