Synopsis

A classical vernacular novel written by Shi Naian in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. It is one of China's "Four Great Classics" and has a complete version of 120 chapters. Taking the peasant uprising led by Song Jiang in the late Northern Song Dynasty as the background, it tells the story of 108 heroes who gathered in Liangshan due to different experiences and resisted corrupt officials. Later, they were recruited by the court and participated in the conquest of Liao Kingdom, Fangla and other battles. In the end, most of the heroes met a tragic end. The book portrays classic characters such as Wu Song, Lin Chong, and Lu Zhishen, with ups and downs of the plot and vivid and popular language. It not only displays the "chivalrous spirit" but also reveals the limitations of peasant uprisings in the feudal era. It is the pinnacle of Chinese classical novels that reflects social reality and human nature, and has a profound influence on later literature, film and television.
