This novel attempts to depict the micro-operations of contemporary China's county and township politics with a realistic touch. It neither over-beautifies nor deliberately vilifies, but presents a true portrait of a grassroots cadre with ideals, limitations, wisdom, and struggles. In the current environment, such stories are both a mirror image of those within the system and a window to outside observers.
