In 1929 Shanghai, banker Han Chenyi and progressive student Lin Beiyu formed their first prejudices against each other over their conflicting ideals. Amid the flames of the War of Resistance, they endured the trials of defending Wuhan, the years in Chongqing, and the perilous relocation of industry, moving from opposition to understanding. Reunited in postwar Shanghai, they became kindred spirits amid rampant inflation and the looming civil war. In 1949, they chose together to stay and welcome the new era. Through thirty years of hardship, they remained true to their original hope of making China better, each protecting it in their own way. In the end, they passed the spirit of a faint light on to the next generation, completing the relay of faith between two generations.
