Back from Taking the Fall: The Devout Heir of the Capital's Elite Breaks His Vows for Her

Modern romance, powerful families in the capital, satisfying revenge, a restrained male lead, a groveling ex, and absolutely no forgiveness

To protect her father's reputation and the Ning family's business, Ning Xi takes the blame for him and spends three years wasting away in a lightless prison.

The day she returns, there are no flowers and no one waiting to welcome her.

Her parents are holding the hand of their adopted daughter, Ning Sisi, as they host an engagement banquet at the most luxurious hotel in the capital.

The groom-to-be is her childhood sweetheart, who once promised to wait three years for her.

She no longer hopes for that cheap excuse for family affection.

Instead, she approaches Shen Kuo, the man no one in the capital dares to cross: a ruthless, austere man who rolls prayer beads between his fingers.

“You need to be obedient and well-behaved, and you need to be able to hold off the pack of wolves in the Shen family who are waiting to pounce.”

She nods, and they seal the deal.

She keeps the Shen family's scheming relatives in line, takes on ambitious clans, and tears away the hypocritical mask of the “childhood friend” at Shen Kuo's side.

The green-tea woman who calls herself Shen Kuo's “younger sister” is always up to something, with a headache today and heart pain tomorrow.

Ning Xi gives a cold laugh and slaps her right back. “I saved Shen Kuo's life. Who do you think you are?”

A few years later, the Ning family goes bankrupt, and her parents kneel on the ground begging her to forgive them.

Her ex sobs and says she's the one he loves most.

Ning Xi takes Shen Kuo's arm and smiles radiantly. “Forgive you? That's God's business. My job is to send you to meet Him.”

That night, the usually aloof man pins her against a wall.

Ning Xi tries to escape. “Mr. Shen, our agreement has expired.”

The “Buddha-like” man, who has always kept himself restrained, crushes his prayer beads in front of everyone. With blood covering his hands, he holds her captive in his arms and begs in a crazed voice, “Xixi, please, don't go.”
