Yan Zi was born in 1976 in Dongjiang, Hunan. Her family was poor when she was young, so she never went to school and learned very little. After divorcing her ex-husband because of domestic abuse, she raised her daughter on her own. Her daughter later married and settled into a happy life. After a lifetime of ups and downs, Yan Zi has seen through love and social conventions. She has no desire to marry again, preferring instead to have a series of serious relationships and live life on her own terms. The lectures on the Three Obediences and Four Virtues back in her hometown wear her down, so she puts down roots in Miaoxi, Shenzhen. Starting out as a cleaner, she eventually runs a mahjong parlor and lives with an open heart and a sunny disposition. She turns down her daughter's invitation to move in, choosing instead to stay in her own little world and keep life lively. All she wants is to be true to herself and stay happy into old age.
