Ling Yao, commander of the Seventh Fleet of the Interstellar Alliance, encounters a meteor storm on his way back. His starship crashes on a barren planet. Once a fearsome commander renowned across the stars, he suddenly becomes a prisoner of a primitive tribe, with a broken left arm, no communications, and rescue impossibly far away.
Facing a savage wilderness and hostile tribes watching him like predators, Ling Yao draws on his exceptional military training and knowledge of interstellar technology to transform the tribe from the ground up. He digs wells and channels springs, makes weapons, and lays traps, turning the weak Wolf Fang tribe into the overlords of the wasteland.
He meets Aya, a kindhearted and innocent tribal girl, and forms a bond with Lie, the tribe's rugged, straightforward leader. Yet he continues to gaze up at the stars, longing for his interstellar home thousands of light-years away. When an interstellar rescue signal flashes across the sky, Ling Yao must make a difficult choice between his bonds and responsibilities on this primitive planet and his longing and duty to return home.
