This is an authorized martial arts sequel to Journey to the West, telling the legendary story of how turmoil returns to the Three Realms after Xuanzang and his disciples complete their pilgrimage to the West and return to Tang. Victorious Fighting Buddha Sun Wukong, Altar Cleanser Envoy Zhu Bajie, and Golden-Bodied Arhat Sha Wujing stand guard over Xuanzang at the Great Ci'en Temple in Chang'an, protecting the Mahayana scriptures. But the lingering spirit of the demon Buddha Wutian, sealed away ten thousand years ago, awakens and stirs up turmoil across the Three Realms. Wutian’s demon generals launch repeated attacks on Chang'an, the seal on the ancient Buddha’s tomb begins to weaken, and demonic energy churns through the Blood Sea of the Netherworld. A catastrophe threatening the survival of the Three Realms quietly descends.
The four masters and disciples are entrusted with a mission in their hour of peril: find the Heavenly Court’s Haotian Mirror, retrieve the Netherworld’s Book of Life and Death, and seek the Sea-Calming Pearl from Spirit Mountain. They gather four supreme treasures to form the Boundless Buddhist Radiance Array and engage Wutian in a fight to the death. In the midst of the battle, a child named Wunian, possessed by Wutian’s lingering spirit, appears unexpectedly, affecting the fate of everyone involved.
In the end, the four masters and disciples wield compassion as their guiding principle and faith as their blade, destroying Wutian’s obsession once and for all and restoring peace to the Three Realms. Their legend is passed down through the generations to the sound of the morning bells and evening drums of Chang’an.
