(Written by a post-80s author. Slow burn, first person, not a wish-fulfillment story, no clichés, no brainless characters, no invincibility, no System. Read with caution if any of that bothers you.) Thirty years ago, I saved a dying little white fox in the mountains. I never imagined that one good deed would become an obsession she carried for three decades.
To stay by my side, she secretly took a transformation herb and gave up her path of cultivation. With her demonic meridians badly damaged, she searched for me for a whole year!
We reunite on a rainy night. She appears as a white-haired girl with fox ears, wraps her tail around my wrist and cuddles up to me, secretly using her demonic power to nourish my prematurely aging body, yet stubbornly claims, “I’m only repaying my debt.”
I have no spiritual roots and can’t cultivate immortality, so I take her everywhere: to seek an expert at a sacred mountain in Tibet, to Japan, where she is gravely injured while living in seclusion with me, to the depths of the South Seas in search of a spirit pearl, to the Egyptian pyramids in pursuit of a legend, and into perilous secret realms in South America.
So what if humans and demons are worlds apart?
She protects me from evil spirits, and I shield her from every storm the human world can throw at us. Carrying the legacy of the nine-tailed fox and her life-bound demon core, we cross mountains and rivers and brave pursuit by other races and dangers in secret realms, all to turn “a brief time together” into “forever, in every lifetime.”
“Even if I use up all my demonic power, I’ll stay with you forever.”
“What meaning does immortality have without you?”
This is a tale of devoted protection that crosses species and spans the globe, sweet enough to make your teeth ache and intense enough to set your blood ablaze!
