“A true tomb isn’t meant to let people in. It’s meant to keep things that shouldn’t get out.”
Deep in the mist-shrouded mountains of southwest China, a legend has long been passed down: “Nine mountains and eight seas, with living tombs among them.” Chen Xu, the protagonist, appears to be a restorer of ancient architecture, but is actually the last descendant of an ancient family of tomb guardians. His family’s mission is not to rob tombs, but to repair, reinforce, and even rebuild ancient mausoleums on the verge of collapse, ensuring that certain things “locked” inside never see the light of day. He believes some tombs were built by the ancients as special prisons, at the cost of their wisdom and lives.
