During the Water and Land Dharma Assembly presided over by Tang Sanzang in his tenth life, the Buddha's radiance shatters the seal holding back the resentment and bloody memories accumulated over his nine previous lives. He witnesses the horrific deaths he was “assigned” in each of those lives: fed to fish, burned alive, frozen to death... Each time he died, his soul was siphoned away by a magical artifact from Mount Lingshan.
Amid unbearable pain and fury, the true spirit of Jin Chanzi awakens, and his primordial ferocity returns. He tears apart the Brocade Sash Kasaya and snaps the Nine-Ringed Monk's Staff before everyone. Above Chang'an, he swears a blood oath: “From this day forth, there is no Tang Monk in this world. There is only Tang Sanzang: one who hides from Heaven and Earth, and buries every last Buddha!”
