After the fall of Peiping in 1937, Chen Shanhe, the young owner of "Songxuezhai" in Liulichang, witnessed his grandfather scratching through ancient heirloom paintings to commemorate the national humiliation. He was also inspired by patriotic student Yang Murong and others, and grew from a wandering intellectual to an underground guardian codenamed "Mohen". He and his comrades risked their lives to protect cultural relics and classics, pass on information, and rescue patriots. Amidst the torment of their dual identities, they used pictures and ink to draw a map of the national spirit in the flames of war, completing the tempering of their personal souls and demonstrating the tenacious inheritance of the fire of civilization in the darkest moments.
