The Comeback of Zhu Qizhen of the Ming Dynasty

“Your Majesty, we have lost at Tumu Fortress. The three hundred thousand troops… are gone.”

The wind carried the stench of blood. Corpses covered the land.

Zhu Qizhen slowly opened his eyes.

He knew better than anyone

according to history, he was about to be captured, deposed, and imprisoned,

becoming a shameful footnote in the history books.

But he lowered his gaze to his bloodstained imperial robes and asked just one question:

“Am I still alive?”

If he was alive, he could still change his fate.

The Taishi of the Oirat sneered. “The Emperor of Great Ming is now nothing more than a prisoner in my tent.”

Zhu Qizhen looked up and replied:

“If a caged dragon sets the grasslands ablaze, the whole steppe will burn beneath the sky.”

That night, flames soared into the heavens.

For the first time, after victory, the Oirat camp was plunged into hell.

This was no miracle. He had seen this ending six hundred years ahead of time.

On the road back to the capital, someone quietly advised him:

“Your Majesty, the traitors are dead. Why pursue this any further?”

Zhu Qizhen drew his blade, his voice cold as iron.

“I don’t want to stop the bleeding. I want to remake the very bones.”

In court, the ledgers were laid open, and the officials turned pale.

Some wept and professed their loyalty. Others pointed accusing fingers at their colleagues.

He said only one thing:

“If no blood is shed today, the realm will fall tomorrow.”

His blade fell, and the traitors were put to death.

At that moment, Great Ming realized for the first time

that the Zhu Qizhen condemned as a foolish ruler in the history books

had died at Tumu Fortress.

The man now seated on the Dragon Throne

understood history and power,

and, more than anything, knew how to wield a blade and rewrite fate.

“I’m not here to ask for forgiveness.”

“I’m here to rewrite the fate of this realm for the next six hundred years.”
