Light from the Fertile Earth

An epic tale of rural life and fate spanning more than twenty years (1988–2010), this story follows a notebook patched together from scraps of torn New Year prints as it tells how Chen Qingshan struggles to take root in the hard soil of adversity, and ultimately brings a glimmer of light up through the earth. The story begins at dusk in late autumn, 1988. Five-year-old Chen Qingshan huddles by the stove, watching as his father is beaten and his left leg broken over a dispute about their homestead. By lamplight, his mother, Li Xiuying, uses scraps cut from old New Year prints to paste together his first notebook. When Teacher Zhao, a retired schoolteacher, places a copy of the Xinhua Dictionary in the child’s hands, no one knows that this humble little book will become a spiritual weapon with which he can fight injustice, record his conscience, and ultimately defend what is right. The story’s central arc: Told in three volumes, “Hard Soil, Tempered Stone, Light Emerging,” it traces the three-decade journey of an ordinary Chinese farmer’s son. This is more than a story of “rising from the bottom.” It asks: When injustice comes crashing down, how can an ordinary person hold on to their dignity? It records how tiny acts of kindness, flickering in the darkness, gather into a river of light that can change one’s fate. It bears witness to how a child who once kept accounts grows into a builder capable of protecting his homeland. Hard Soil, Light Emerging is for everyone who has ever felt insignificant but refused to surrender their dignity, for everyone who still believes in the power of a glimmer of light amid the darkness, and for everyone who strives to keep their footing in the tide of history and make the land beneath them a little better. For only those who have passed through the abyss can know the value of light; only those rooted in hardship can understand the full weight of life.
