The Yongle Archives: Unlocking Ancient Technological Secrets

The Yongle Encyclopedia was lost for a hundred years. The world knew it only as an unparalleled compendium, unaware that its pages concealed secret archives of Chinese technology spanning a thousand years.

Chen Fan unexpectedly inherited the mantle of Guardian of the Encyclopedia and unlocked its hidden maps. Only then did he learn that, from the pre-Qin era through the Song and Yuan dynasties, successive imperial courts had sealed their most important records of crafts, institutions, and culture in more than a dozen underground archives across the country. From the origins of governance in Guanzhong to the pinnacle of craftsmanship in Heluo, from the flourishing Silk Road in Dunhuang to the marvels of Jiangnan handicrafts, each archive was a buried museum of ancient technology.

Following clues in the texts, Chen Fan led a team on a journey to overcome trials and protect the archives. They solved mathematical mechanisms to unlock pre-Qin arithmetic texts, restored ironmaking techniques to open a Han dynasty workshop, pieced together Silk Road fragments to reconstruct the full picture of trade, and deciphered waterways and secret passages to recover Song-Yuan navigation charts. Lost for a thousand years, the recipes for secret-color porcelain, the structure of the drawloom, the evolution of movable-type printing, and the design of ancient astronomical instruments all came to light, filling in crucial missing pieces in the history of Chinese technology.

The journey to protect the archives brought both perseverance and sacrifice, triumphs and setbacks. From the deserts of Dunhuang to the misty rain of Jiangnan, a journey to safeguard a civilization across a thousand years slowly unfolded.

Preserve the wisdom of our ancestors and carry on the lifeblood of China. Let lost techniques see daylight again, and let the wisdom of those who came before us be seen by the world.
