Synopsis

1937. The land is shattered, and the rivers run red. Xiao Bai has eyes of different colors.

After being parachuted into the 149th Regiment, she finds herself bound by three kinds of love in a world torn apart by war.

Political commissar Fang Qiming’s protection is the quietest.

He is always one step behind her, her strongest support in the flames of war and her partner in spirit. “Xiao Bai, I’m not the scabbard that restrains you. I’m the one who holds the blade alongside you.”

Enemy officer Chen Zheng’s gaze is the most dangerous.

He admires her sharp edge and schemes against her weaknesses. “Commander Xiao, I have to say, in this muddy world of chaos, you are a star I can only look up to.” When their game of strategy ends, he gracefully gives up the entire board.

Her comrade Mo Xue’s devotion is the most fierce. “Commander, from bandit to Eighth Route soldier, my fate changed because of you.” She always stands in front of Xiao Bai, taking bullets for her with her own body and paving a path to safety with her life.

Xiao Bai is tempered from an Eighth Route Army regimental commander into a legendary general. Leading an unconventional band of soldiers, she carves a path through a chaotic world rife with spies. Her mother’s “tailor” files and the Kuomintang military intelligence agency’s conspiratorial deals all become part of her legend.

When they marry on the battlefield, the darkness before dawn is at its coldest.

Standing atop Tiananmen Gate and watching the red flag rise, she keeps close to her heart her mother’s silver pendant, the political commissar’s bullet casing, her comrade’s throwing knife, and the empty liquor flask left behind by that man.

Between devoted protection, dangerous temptation, and the willingness to give one’s life…

She ultimately becomes the “Red Blade” that cleaves through the darkness, forging a new dawn for herself and for the countless homes behind her.

This book features a powerful heroine, multiple romantic storylines, and a serious historical setting. The heroine stays sharp throughout; the three relationships are moving without being melodramatic, and every character has a complete arc. The story spans the War of Resistance against Japan through the Chinese Civil War.

Any Stories Set in Republican-Era China About a Patriotic Protagonist Determined to Save the Country?

I want a protagonist who cares deeply about the nation and its people, and is wholly devoted to serving them. Saving the country should come first, with romance as a side plot. I’ve read too many Republican-era novels about talented men and beautiful women. I want to see stories from that era that are about more than love: great figures and martyrs who broke through the darkness in search of the light and feared no sacrifice.
