At twenty-five, Cai Sanshui is like a rag that fate has wrung dry over and over. He grew up in Sanming, scraping by on odd jobs and writing poetry. Sensitive and insecure, he doesn't even dare hope to be loved. Before her death, his grandmother, Cai Jianqiu, leaves him with just one wish: she wants to see the stars in Tibet. So he sets off for Lhasa and, through a twist of fate, finds himself on National Highway 318.

The day his car breaks down on the plateau, he meets Ma Youshan, a backpacker with a buzz cut, a cheeky grin, a sharp tongue, and a habit of meddling. He barges into Sanshui's world like the sun. After a month on the road together, camping, getting lost, arguing, and playing UNO, Sanshui realizes that what he fears most isn't loneliness, but having someone truly care about him. And all the things that happen on the rest of their journey teach him this: the person he found on Highway 318 wasn't just one person. He found a family.
